hello friends! did you miss me? i haven't posted anything in 2 whole days!! in the interim, i have filled my time with entirely too many meetings, several cupcakes (given), a drive home (yay!), too many dumb people and a few vaccines. aren't you so jealous?! today i went for the official visit with the travel clinic, which i will return to in a minute. first i would like to examine the dumbness that seems to surround me.
why are some people so dumb? in nona, i saw one woman let her child run free in the Target parking lot. now, the Target in nona is not the most frequented place in town but still, i feel as though a place with motorized vehicles is not the best option for places to let your 3 year old blow off steam. after successfully avoiding crushing the wee tot, i watched 2 girls ride their bicycle built for 2 (awesome) down highway 61, the busy highway that runs along the edge of town, with their helmets in the basket on the front of the bike. now i applaud them for having helmets but do you really think you're going to have time to grab the helmet & secure it before the on-coming vehicle, at highway speeds mind you, splatters your brains on the road? probs not. but good job for having it...halfway there girls! my last question: why on clinic voicemails (this is multiple, not just one, people) does the recording say" if this is an emergency you can hang up and call 911 or simply wait on the line for someone to help you?" i generally don't like to wait when experiencing a medical emergency & one would think the clinic would rather encourage people to simply call 911 as opposed to offering to wait on hold. i'm just saying.
ok, back to the travel clinic, my new best friend, marsha, the travel nurse, so kindly walked me through my upcoming travels to nairobi to party with the christian brothers. she was quite impressed with my knowledge of the diseases in the region. i refrained from telling her about updating my bucketlist & re-evaluating my mortality after visiting the cdc website. after we walked through the risks of brushing my teeth with faucet water, swimming in any body of water that does not wreak of chlorine and eating anything that is not hot, i was ready for me 52 shots. ok, i exaggerate...5 shots. 3 in one arm, 2 in the other. marsha warned me i may feel a tad icky tonight...fever, vomiting, soreness in the injection site, and possibly sleepiness. oh marsha, you failed to tell me i would start snoring in my office. just short of laying my head on my desk at exactly 3pm (she told me it would take 3 hours), i yawned my way through 1 more meeting. now me & my pounding sleepy head, sore arms & tingly fingers are going home. but it is all worth it for my newly-found (in 8-10 days) super-immunity! polio - covered...yellow fever - you bet!...typhoid - pppht, i ain't scurred...hepatitis a - banana, please! meningitis - well kinda, i mean they are pretty sure but avoid anyone with it just in case. er...hey, wait!
